Cleaning & disinfecting

Professional cleaning of dampening solution systems and pipework

Bacteria, fungi and biofilm in dampening solution systems

In modern offset printing presses, bacteria, fungi and biofilm present an increasing risk to the quality of the dampening solution. Particularly in reduced-alcohol or alcohol-free printing, the natural disinfecting effect of IPA is diminished, allowing microorganisms to develop more rapidly in pipework, buffer tanks and recirculation systems.

Contamination from paper dust, pigments and other residues provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. During production downtime, for example over weekends, the process water warms up, significantly accelerating bacterial growth. As a result, biofilm can develop and spread throughout the entire dampening solution system.

Possible consequences
  • Disrupted dampening solution/ink balance
  • Dot gain
  • High dampening solution levels resulting in ink emulsification
  • Glazing of the rollers
  • Clogged filters and pipework

A thorough cleaning and disinfection of the entire dampening solution system is the most effective way to remove this contamination and prevent future problems.

Professional cleaning by DR Graphics

DR Graphics cleans and disinfects complete dampening solution systems using specially developed cleaning and disinfecting agents. This includes the thorough cleaning of the buffer tank, water softening unit, pipework and the process water outlet.

For flushing, we use our own mobile flushing unit equipped with a chemical-resistant pump and matching hoses. This allows the cleaning agent to circulate efficiently throughout the entire system, thoroughly removing bacteria, biofilm and contamination, so that your dampening solution system performs optimally once again.

Eliminates biofilm in pipework, buffer tanks and reservoirs

Biofilm is a slimy layer of microorganisms that adheres to surfaces continuously exposed to moisture. In printing plants, biofilm commonly develops in the pipework, buffer tanks and reservoirs of dampening solution systems. It is usually visible as a white or slimy deposit and provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and algae.

In systems with stagnant water, biofilm can develop rapidly and negatively affect the quality of the process water. This increases the risk of contamination, system malfunctions and an unstable dampening solution/ink balance.

UVC disinfection prevents biofilm formation

A UVC disinfection system effectively eliminates bacteria, fungi, algae and other microorganisms. The centrally installed UVC lamp prevents the formation of new biofilm and keeps the dampening solution system clean and hygienic without the use of chemicals.

DR Graphics supplies and installs complete UVC disinfection systems for printing companies. We are happy to advise you on the most suitable solution and, if required, provide a no-obligation implementation proposal, including a clear cost estimate.
